We talked with Tamatem team about their company.

How would you describe Tamatem in a single tweet?

Tamatem, the leading mobile game publisher in the MENA region. Games in Arabic = Tamatem

How did it all start and why?

The company started in 2013, we noticed a gap that needed to be filled. The MENA region is one of the most interesting regions for gaming, having Arabic as the 4th most spoken language in the world, we noticed that there are more than 400K games in english on the app store in comparison to only 5K games in Arabic, although the region has the highest ARPPU in the world, with more than 100M smartphone users. We noticed a need there that needed to be filled, so we launched Tamatem, to provide the arabic gamers with high quality games that are localized to meet their language, culture and need. Hussam Hammo, Tamatem’s founder took the idea to California to 500 startups accelerator program, it was the first Arabic company to enter this program and from there the company started and moved to Jordan.

What have you achieved so far?

The team is growing on monthly basis at Tamatem, today we are more than 55 employees working in different departments including Marketing, public relations, UX/UI, social media, product management, Support and creative. We published more than 50 games, all reaching top charts. We have more than 100 Million downloads on our games and more than 1 Million active players per month. Our card game Baloot is considered the biggest card game in the Arab world

How will you use your recent funding round?

Beginning of 2020, we raised a $3.5MM Series A follow-on round. The round was led by existing investor Wamda Capital, with participation from  Modern Electronics Company (a subsidiary of AlFaisaliah Group) and North Base Media. The purpose of this round is two-fold: to double down on Tamatem’s efforts in the region, and to expand beyond the MENA to underserved markets worldwide.

What do you plan to achieve in the next 2-3 years?

Increase market reach, expand into other markets and open an office in the region.
